Interview With The Amazing Artist Liokness

1. Where are we talking from today?

A. Los Angeles, California. In the valley!;)

2. Where did you get your artist name from?

A. The whole lion/lioness concept originated with me because I loved the movie “The Lion King” as a child and always wanted to be a lion, as opposed to wanting to be a princess, like perhaps most girls do. I then coincidentally but serendipitously starting singing backup for a reggae band called “The Roaring Lions,” which validated my premeditated stage name idea, “Lioness Kate.” A while later I was signed with an indie label and my A&R manager at the time suggested that I call myself “Liokness” where the ‘k’ is silent so it’s still pronounced like ‘lioness,’ but that way it’s unique and I needed something that hadn’t already been taken. I thought it was a dumb idea at first, but here I am now with that same dumb name. No offense to him, I thank him for the creative idea! I don’t correct people however they want to say it.

3. Music wise what are you working on right now? Are you currently promoting a single or album?

A. I continue to work on my solo songs as I usually do. One thing I am starting to dab into that I’ve never done before is sampling. I’m taking sampled hooks of old “vintage” songs and writing a new pop song around it. And yes, I do have a single I just released; it’s called “I’d Rather Die,” and it’s available on all platforms. I will also be having a freestyle dance music video to it coming out within the month.

4. Who or what were the most significant influences on your musical life and career?
A. There was never one particular thing or person that influenced me to continue with music, but rather, just a bunch of little things everyday that inspire me to keep writing and creating. It sounds lame, but something as simple as witnessing someone else’s creation like smelling and appreciating a really good perfume, being moved by a particular scene in a movie, or getting goosebumps from a song I hear…all contribute to my motivation to sing and write.

5. Who are your favorite musicians?

A. Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Green Day, The Dixie Chicks, Miley Cyrus, Michelle Branch, Weezer, Wheetus, Elliphant, Goo Goo Dolls, Ingrid Michaelson, Sean Paul, Flo Rida, Jason Derulo, Jeremih, Chris Brown, Phoebe Ryan, Alanis Morissette, Ed Sheeran, Charli XCX, Post Malone, MO, Matt Nathanson, La Roux, Avril Lavigne, Dolly Parton, Kesha, Nicki Minaj, Matchbox Twenty, Too Short, Shawn Mendes, One Republic, and probably more that I’m forgetting…

6. What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?

A. Money, time, and finding the right people to help me execute my vision.

7. As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A. To have made music that I can genuinely say I’m proud.

8. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A. Having the knowledge that everything is and will be ok and maintaining an endless excitement for what is yet to come.

9. What is your present state of mind?
A. A little anxious…but happy.

10. What is your most treasured possession?

A. My Macbook and iPhone (I’m a materialistic Apple cult follower). Only because that’s where I keep all my song and music stuff, so without that, I’d have to do a lot of starting over. Writing and singing songs is sort of the only thing I’m kind of good at, so without that, I don’t really have much else.

11. What do you enjoy doing most?

A. Dancing at parties with friends to my favorite songs, taking walks at around 6 pm, and staying in hotels.

12. Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?

A. Healthy, happy, and busy at creating content.

13. Where you @ online?

@liokness or just google/YouTube search “liokness…”
