New Interview With Artist David Smalt

Where are we talking from today?

I am in Kagel Canyon, a hop & skip from Los Angeles.

Where did you get your artist’s name from?

My parents gave it to me when I was born.

Music-wise what are you working on right now? Are you currently promoting a single or album?

I’m nearly finished with my second LP that will be released in the Fall of this year. I just finished a symphonic orchestral EP that was inspired by where I’m living right now. I also have a side project with my friend Matt Hectorne called HEALING in which we make synthy Thom York-esque electronica tunes. We have a cover of George Harrison coming out on March 3rd.

Who or what were the most significant influences on your musical life and career?

I think growing up in church taught me the significant role that music had in everyone’s life. My father is a musician and gently pushed my brothers and me to play and be part of the aspect of the church.

Who are your favorite musicians?

I have so many but right now I’m currently obsessed with Aldous Harding, Weyes Blood, Claude Debussy, & The Blue Nile.

What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?

It takes a great deal of energy for independent musicians to put themselves out there from writing the music, performing, keeping social media active, etc. So, that.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

I think the ability to support yourself financially without having to compromise is what I would define as success.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I think that perfect happiness is peace. Peace is so undervalued in our society. So it goes.

What is your present state of mind?

Ready to go for a run.

What is your most treasured possession?

A few pieces of art that my daughter made.

What do you enjoy doing most?

I love exercising, drinking wine, being creative, watching films, writing…

Where would you like to be in 10 years?

I’d love to own a home and studio in Kagel Canyon. I think the ability to do that would infer that everything else in my life was going well.
